Abbey, the half-parish of Abbey-Duniry in the diocese of Clonfert, is situated in South East Galway, approximately 19 km east of Loughrea and 12 km west of Portumna on the R353. The village takes its name from the ‘Abbey of Kilnalahan’ which dates back to the mid-thirteenth century and the ruins of which remain in the centre of the village.
Abbey is characterised by its rich natural beauty and by the historic monastery that is the village centrepiece. The village provides the following amenities: Catholic Church, Primary School, Village Shop with limited Post Office facilities, Public House, Community Centre and Cemetery. The population of the village is less than 100 people but when we include the surrounding rural hinterland there is a population of approximately 250 people in Abbey parish.
