Letters from Constance Markievicz to Fr Eugene
Liberty Hall
Dear Father Eugene
Just a line to tell you I wish that you were with us and hope that your exile will come to an end. Everyone missed you at the funeral which was most impressive. The grief and indignation of tens of thousands seemed to float in the air and the terse speech with its straightforward threat must have put fear to the heart of the enemy. Everyone and everything was so self controlled.
I tried to see you before you left, but every time I rang you up you were out.
I gcuise na hEireann (For the cause of Ireland)
Constance de Markievicz
The one prayer of all here was for strength should we be called to follow Tom Clarke.
Second Letter from Constance Markievicz to Fr Eugene
143 Leinster Rd
Dear Father Eugene
Just a line at this crisis to tell you we are all firm and determined and know we have your prayers. I don’t know if you will get this, as all my letters are interfered with.
I was sorry I could not get to see you when you were over, but only heard that you were there too late to get to you.
Goodbye
I gcuise na hEireann
