Celebrating with the Mummers

St Stephen's Night 1965

Frances Holohan

St Stephen’s night was always a night to welcome various mummers’ groups when they called to all the local bars in the area to entertain those present and at the same time to raise money for some local charity or event.

This group photograph is from one such night and it is clear that everyone is in a happy mood.

  • My Father, Bennie Sullivan was born in Abbey and emigrated to England in 1954. As a child I can remember him describing St Stephens night and the Mummers and was always fascinated with his stories.
This photo brings to mind those memories, Thankyou.
