Granny’s Brown Bread

  • 14 ounces self-raising flour
  • 2 ounces Bran
  • 11 ounces Coarse Wholemeal
  • 3/4 teaspoon Bread Soda
  • 1 Litre Buttermilk (approx)

Method

Sieve 14 ozs self-raising flour and ¾ teaspoon of bread soda into a bowl.  Add 2 ozs of bran and 11 ozs of coarse wholemeal.  Mix all ingredients.  Make a well in the centre and add approx 1 litre of buttermilk.  Stir with a wooden spoon until all the buttermilk is absorbed.  Turn out onto a floured surface.  Knead until the side next the board is smooth.  Turn smooth side up and place in a round tin flattening into the shape of the tin.  Cut a cross on the top with a knife.  Place tin in a pre-heated oven at 200oC.  Bake for approximately 45 minutes.
