Foods in the past

In my Granddad's Childhood

Emily O'Hehir

Cabbage
Potatoes

Irish dinners were very different in the past.  They ate everything they would get.  In my granddad’s childhood these were the dinners, breakfast and supper or tea.

For dinner they had cabbage, potatoes and sometimes when they didn’t have potatoes they would use brown bread.  They also had home-grown carrots, meat from cattle, sheep and pigs reared on their farm.

For breakfast and supper they had homemade brown bread with a choice of jam or eggs from the farm.  Drink choices were water, milk or tea.

Treats were treacle bread or a wafer ice-cream from the local shop.
