The Digital StoryMap of Abbey Village

A Heritage Week Event in 2023

Frances Holohan

Following an Audit of the Heritage Sites in Abbey carried out in 2017, Abbey Heritage made application to the Heritage Council for funding to enable us to embark on a project ‘Mapping the Heritage Sites of Abbey’ in 2023.  Our application was successful and the funding received from the National Heritage Council enabled us to engage Heritage Consultant, Zena Hoctor, to conduct the project.  The finished Digital StoryMap of Abbey Village was presented during National Heritage Week at an event in Abbey Community Centre.

The interactive map shows the location of fifteen heritage sites in Abbey and includes recordings and three short films that will be of interest to Abbey people everywhere.  The first of these films is entitled ‘A Tour of Kilnalahan’ and is presented by Dr Christy Cunniffe.

The second film ‘Memories of Abbey’s past’ relates to the commercial life in Abbey in bygone years and is a conversation between John Holohan, Teresa Hynes and Padraig Lynch from the three businesses that formerly existed in Abbey.

The third and final film included in the StoryMap is entitled ‘The Ballygowan Evictions’ and is presented by Ann Hodgins who was born in Ballygowan and who relates the history of those events from the late 1880s.

The interactive map takes you to many other sites in our village where you can read a brief description of its history or a story connected with the particular site.
