Me and my Granny made bread in her kitchen when I was eight. We used wholemeal flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt and butter milk. Granny had the oven heated a half hour before we started.
We put the ingredients into a bowl. I made a well or a circle in the middle of the mix. Then we poured in the buttermilk and mixed together until the dough was soft. Then we put th enough on a floured table. I patted it gently into a round shape about two inches high. Then Granny cut a deep cross on the top and she put it into the oven for twenty minutes to bake.
When she took out the bread she tapped the bottom with her fingers. The sound was hollow so she said our bread was done.
