My Granddad had a skillet pot when he was young. It was sixty years old. His mother used it a lot. At that time bread was baked in the skillet pot over the fire, hanging from a hook. They baked brown soda bread.
The fire was the centre of the house – cooking was done there. Also it heated the house, clothes were dried there and supper was made there.
The hook swung like a gate over the fire. The kettles would brew there and pots would cook there. Skillet pots could be bought in lots of different sets. You put embers on top of the lid to keep the top and bottom of the pot warm on both sides.
When they would get up for breakfast they would make porridge in the skillet pot.
