Minister Seán Canney’s Visit to Abbey
Abbey Community Development Association and Abbey Tidy Towns were delighted to warmly welcome Minister Sean Canney and his wife, Geraldine, to the village recently to celebrate Abbey’s outstanding success in the 2024 National Tidy Towns competition. The village proudly took home a coveted Gold Medal, along with a Special Award for its Sustainability – Circular Economy Project.

During his visit, Minister Canney was given a walking tour of the village by members of the Tidy Towns group. The tour included stops at several of Abbey’s community projects, such as the Community Hen House, Lady Well, Finnegan’s Permaculture Garden, and the newly refurbished Herb Garden.

Along the way, the Minister took time to greet the pupils of St. Feichin’s National School, much to the delight of students and staff alike. The tour concluded at the Abbey Community Centre, where a brief history of Kilnalahan Monastery and the many heritage initiatives the community has undertaken over the years was shared, followed by some locally produced refreshments.

Minister Canney praised the village’s remarkable commitment to the Tidy Towns competition, highlighting Abbey’s participation for over 50 years. He commended the community’s pride, dedication, and spirit, describing them as “truly inspiring,” and congratulated everyone involved for firmly putting Abbey on the map.
